Abubakar was born in Jada in the state of Adamawa in northeastern Nigeria. When he was eight years old, his father died in prison and was taken in with relatives. From 1954 to 1960 he attended primary school in Jada and from 1961 to 1965 the secondary school in Yola . At Yola Middle School , he studied economics, British economic history, politics and the Hausa language . In 1967 he moved to Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria and received his doctorate in law. From 1969 Abubakar worked for 20 years at customs, where he was promoted to deputy director. From 1989 he worked as a private entrepreneur in the energy and media sector; Before being elected Vice President, he was chairman of seven companies. He owns the ABTI American University of Nigeria and the oil company Intels Nigeria Limited , which operates in Angola , Equatorial Guinea , Gabon and São Tomé and Príncipe , among others . In 1998 he helped found the People's Democratic Party (PDP), and with its electoral success, he became Vice President of Nigeria on May 29, 1999.

For the presidential elections on April 21, 2007 Atiku Abubakar wanted to run as a candidate for the PDP and therefore disapproved of Obasanjo's attempts to stand for a third time through a constitutional amendment. Obasanjo, however, wanted to prevent Abubakar's candidacy and raised allegations of corruption against him. After the Economic and Financial Crime Commission accused Abubakar on September 18, 2006 of misappropriating US $ 555 million, the PDP suspended him as Vice President. Abubakar switched to the opposition Action Congress (AC), which was an electoral alliance with the All Nigeria People's Party (ANPP). In the presidential election he received 7.47% of the vote.

Corruption allegations

Atiku Abubakar builds his own fortune on smart investments, hard work, and the luck of being in the right place at the right time. However, critics accuse him of corruption. As early as 1984, Abubakar was investigated when, as the responsible customs officer at Lagos Airport, he allowed 53 suitcases allegedly partially filled with money from the Emir of Gwandu without checking the contents. In August 2005 it became known that Atiku Abubakar had received bribes from US Congressman William J. Jefferson and, in return, had introduced Internet technology to a US company in Nigeria.

Further career

Abubakar also ran for the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a presidential candidate in 2015 , but lost in the primaries. In 2019 he challenged incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari (APC) for the PDP and achieved second place with 41% of the vote.
