history

The Club Atlético Colegiales, usually only known under the name Atlético Colegiales or Colegiales , was founded on January 7th 1977 in Asunción , the capital of Paraguay , by the Zacarías family. This rich family called the association Colegiales , in German students . A member of the Zacarías', Juan Desiderio Zacarías, worked as a coach for Atlético Colegiales for 21 years and made the first leap into the Primera División , the highest football league in Paraguay , with the club in 1982 . There they established themselves and in the 1990 season they qualified for the Copa Libertadores in 1991 by winning the Paraguayan Cup . Atlético Colegiales did respectable there and finished the group stage in first place ahead of league rivals Club Cerro Porteño and the two Peruvian clubs Universitario de Deportes and Sport Boys . While there was only a draw against Cerro Porteño, the Sport Boys and Universitario de Deportes were each able to win once and play a draw, which ended up taking first place, tied with Cerro Porteño, but with the better goal difference. As a result, Atlético Colegiales was eligible to start in the round of 16, where they had to compete with Club Olimpia , who were defending champions in this round, and drew 1: 1 and 1: 2 short. The Club Olimpia, also from Paraguay, advanced to the finals in the further course of the tournament and only lost to Colo-Colo from Chile .

In the following period it was not until 2000 before Atlético Colegiales participated again in the Copa Libertadores . This time the tournament was less successful for the club, they failed in the group stage as the last behind América de Cali from Colombia , Rosario Central from Argentina and Sporting Cristal from Peru with only one win (2: 1 against Sporting Cristal) and one draw (3: 3 against Rosario Central) with four defeats. Five years earlier, Atlético Colegiales had advanced to the semi-finals of the Copa Conmebol , a predecessor of the Copa Sudamericana as the second most important continental tournament for club teams in South America, after having defeated The Strongest La Paz from Bolivia and Institución Atlética Sud América from Uruguay . In the round of the best four teams, Colegiales lost to Rosario Central.

In the league, Atlético Colegiales never won the Paraguayan football championship. Currently they play in the second-rate Segunda División, after being promoted from the third division in the 2008 season.
