Atlanta International Pop Festival (1969)

The first Atlanta International Pop Festival took place on July 4th and 5th, 1969 at the Atlanta Motor Speedway south of Atlanta . Friday, July 4th, was Independence Day 1969. Six weeks later, the Woodstock Festival took place. More than 100,000 spectators came, some estimates go up to 150,000.

Notes about the festival

  • During the festival it was very hot, over 35 degrees, so the local fire brigades sprayed water on the spectators to prevent heat stroke .
  • The supply of beverages was described as inadequate.
  • The festival was organized by a team that included Chris Cowing, Robin Conant and Alex Cooley . Cooley also organized the second (and final) Atlanta International Pop Festival the following year.
  • On Monday, July 7th, 1969, the organizers presented a free concert in Piedmont Park in Atlanta. In addition to the Chicago Transit Authority, Delaney & Bonnie and Spirit, who had also performed at the Atlanta International Pop Festival, there was another attraction here with the Grateful Dead .
