Zoltan Székessy (born March 7, 1899 in Dombiratos , Hungary; † December 18, 1968 in Düsseldorf ) was a Hungarian-German sculptor and professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy .

life and work

After studying at the Free Art School in Budapest from 1921–1922, he studied with Richard Langer at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf until 1927 . Only interrupted by training as a wood carver journeyman in Budapest. He received further training at the Burg Giebichenstein Art College in Halle with Gerhard Marcks and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Bernhard Bleeker . After a short time as a freelance sculptor in Budapest, he finally moved to Düsseldorf in 1929.

He designed his sculpture Sitzendes Kind in 1937 on the occasion of the Reich Exhibition Schaffendes Volk in Düsseldorf for a fountain in the Düsseldorfer Schlageter Siedlung (today Golzheimer Siedlung). Originally he was supposed to design one of the twelve sculptures on the water axis in the north park, but he had to swap his original, lucrative order for the sculpture in the north park with the party-loyal artist Ernst Gottschalk . In 1939 the sculpture Seated Child was classified as degenerate by the National Socialists . Székessy bought the sculpture back himself and saved it from melting down. Before the city of Düsseldorf could buy back the sculpture before the war, the sculpture was stolen from Székessy's garden and destroyed. In 1963 the city made a duplicate, which is now in the old place in the Golzheimer Siedlung.

After the Second World War, he received a professorship at the local art academy from 1952 to 1964. Some of his students were Wolfgang Binding , Udo Meyer , Benno Werth and Hubert Löneke and Pieter Sohl from Heidelberg.

Media coverage

On December 2, 2018, an episode of the NDR's Lieb & Teuer program was broadcast, moderated by Janin Ullmann and filmed in the Kupferstichkabinett of the Hamburger Kunsthalle . In it, two sculptures were discussed with the art historian Stefan Schwarzl, which represented Johanna Ey and were created by Hermann Hundt and Zoltan Székessy.
