The publishing house was relocated to Zurich during the National Socialist era , and after the Second World War , Hürlimann set up a new branch in Freiburg im Breisgau . The Zurich-based Atlantis Verlag expired in 1992. The youth book program had already been transferred to the Pro Juventute Foundation in 1982 and has been published by Orell Füssli since 2003 .

history

In the 1920s, Martin Hürlimann was in charge of Orbis Terrarum , a new series of photo books at Ernst Wasmuth Verlag in Berlin . In 1929 Hürlimann founded the magazine Atlantis . Since the two series exceeded the production capacity of the original publisher, he founded Atlantis Verlag in Berlin in 1929/1930 , in which he then published the two series.

The publishing program was initially geared towards the topics of foreign countries and travel, in addition to the two series, Hürlimann published photo books and works of fiction. Another specialization took place on the subject of music, which Hürlimann was particularly interested in. In 1936, under the direction of Bettina Hürlimann, a division with children's books was added. In the same year, due to the situation in Germany during the Nazi era , Hürlimann founded an independent company of the same name and in the following years relocated its activities more and more to Switzerland. During this time, the publishing house was oriented towards the Swiss principle of intellectual national defense .

After the Berlin publishing house, including the warehouse and archives, had been completely destroyed by the bombing raids on Berlin, Hürlimann rebuilt the German branch in Freiburg im Breisgau with a license from the French occupation authorities. In doing so, the publishing house felt obliged to rebuild the culture and start anew, especially with the global orientation of its program. Atlantis Verlag grew steadily over the next two decades. It was not geared towards the mass market, but distinguished itself in particular through the solidity of the presentation and high-quality paper.

The publisher's program was strongly geared towards the interests of Martin and Bettina Hürlimann. After they both withdrew from the publishing house - Martin Hürlimann gave up the management of the publishing house in 1967, his wife also withdrew in 1974 - the first difficulties arose. In 1982 the publishing house was reorganized and the Pro Juventute Foundation took over the children's books. After restructuring, her publishing business was sold in May 2003 to Orell Füssli Verlag, which still publishes a range of picture, children's and youth books under the Atlantis label . The remaining Zurich-based Atlantis Verlag expired in 1992. The rights to the music titles were acquired by the music book publisher Schott .
