Atmagea (German Atmadscha ) is a village in Dobruja , in the Tulcea district in Romania . It belongs to the municipality of Ciucurova ; had 188 inhabitants in 2011. The population has been falling in recent years.
history
A large number of Turks settled here and gave the village the name that stands for sparrowhawks . Atmagea must have been inhabited a long time before the Turkish settlement. However, it is not known who lived in Atmagea before the Turks, as archaeological traces have not yet been evaluated. The Turkish settlement preceded the German. Many of the Turkish residents migrated back to the Ottoman Empire . The Turkish place names were often adopted by the German population, especially since not all Turks withdrew to the Ottoman Empire.
The German priest Johannes Bonekemper worked in Atmagea from 1849 to 1853 , who left extensive records. These are being processed at North Dakota State University , since many Dobruja Germans had emigrated to North Dakota in the United States . Before that, Atmagea had been a small religious center of this population group. The construction of the Protestant church began in Ottoman times.
