Atwater is a city in the US state of California , which is located in Merced County . With around 28,000 inhabitants, the urban area covers an area of ​​14 square kilometers.

The city has officially existed since 1922, but the first settlers were already in the area in the 1870s. Due to the railroad development of the area at that time, Atwater was created.

Atwater is also known little outside of the city because of the former Castle Air Force Base air force base . There is also an associated museum, which attracts nationwide visitors.
