Atwater is a city in the US state of California , which is located in Merced County . With around 28,000 inhabitants, the urban area covers an area of 14 square kilometers.
The city has officially existed since 1922, but the first settlers were already in the area in the 1870s. Due to the railroad development of the area at that time, Atwater was created.
Atwater is also known little outside of the city because of the former Castle Air Force Base air force base . There is also an associated museum, which attracts nationwide visitors.

According to the 2010 census , the population was around 28,100, which is an increase of 5,000 compared to the previous ten years. The majority of the population consists of whites (around 65 percent) followed by Latinos . Their number has increased substantially since the beginning of the 21st century. Other population groups include African American and Asian immigrants, both of which are minorities. The 2010 census also recorded around 8,800 households in Atwater.
