The Neu-Ulm Theater is the only professional theater in Neu-Ulm , run as a private theater , in the legal form of a GbR, civil society . Theater Neu-Ulm is a member of the Association of Independent Performing Arts Bavaria eV

General

The theater was founded in 1994 by Claudia Riese and Heinz Koch in Berlin as a free stage without a permanent house under the name AuGuSTheater (abbreviation for Autonomous Goethe and Schiller Theater). In the first two years, the AuGuSTheater was a cooperating guest at the Ulm Theater and played on the stage of the so-called podium there on days when there was no play. In addition, they toured and played wherever there was at least four square meters of space. In the 1996/1997 season, there was cooperation with the Ulm-based dansarts balletcentrum , which played on the weekends.

The theater in Neu-Ulm has had a permanent venue since 1997. Initially, the stage resided in the concert hall built around 1900, which for a long time was the only large assembly room in Neu-Ulm, served as a cinema, as a location for political events, for rock concerts and much more. Professional theater has been performed there for more than 30 years, 15 of which the AuGuSTheater Neu-Ulm was at home. As of June 30, 2012, the lease was terminated early because the building no longer complied with the provisions of the Ordinance on Places of Assembly. From the perspective of the private investor, who bought the building at the end of 2011, renovation would have been so expensive that artistic businesses and cultural organizations could no longer have paid the rents. There were protests in the city, but that did not prevent the demolition. A café and apartments in the new building will be ready for occupancy in mid-2014. As Theater Neu-Ulm, the theater has had its new venue 170 meters further on Hermann-Köhl-Strasse (corner of Schützenstrasse) since September 21, 2012.

Until the end of 2017, the theater was a member of the German Stage Association, Private Theater Group. Since they see themselves more as independent theater makers, "Riese & Ko" have left the stage association and have joined the "Association of Free Performing Arts". The current works by contemporary authors are performed, but a high percentage of the en-suite game operations are in-house productions, which, unlike game templates written by an author, are created through joint development of scenes and processes (improvising, trying out, fixing). Since roles are written specifically for the performers in this production method (including any vocal parts), and since the texts react to very current developments and topics currently being discussed, as well as taking regional circumstances into account, works are created that address the audience directly and are therefore particularly appreciated become. A success of this work: a special prize from the seven-member jury for the in-house production Helden auf dem Siding at the 29th Bavarian Theater Days 2011 in Bamberg .

Artistic features

  • Chaos-Reading - a very own variant of the poetry slam created by Theater Neu-Ulm (with a poet but without a competition), a format that strains the laughing muscles but also stimulates the mind with a number of unconventional ideas for play.
  • Theater sport - The Neu-Ulm Theaterinitiated improvisational theater in the region.
  • Without a network ... - This is a series with which theater can bring current social issues to the board, for which there are (yet) no plays. There was "Without a network ... poor", "Without a network ... die", "Without a network ... sick" or "Without a network ... prison". On the evening, for example, the complex “ criminal trial and penal system ” was thematized earlier and today in informative texts and moving original documents. Mothers of prisoners were on stage, prisoners , a director of a correctional facility , texts about crime and punishment were spoken.
  • Yesterday - Another series deals with historical dates and events, for example "November 9th", which was a special date four times in the 20th century: in 1918 the German Kaiser abdicated, in 1923 the march on the Feldherrnhalle in Munich , 1938 was the night of the pogrom and in 1989 the wall came down.
  • Theater in the head - In 1997 the theater started an initiative theater on sick leave.
  • Narrative theater - The Neu-Ulm theater has been cultivating the form of narrative theater, which has been flourishing again for a few years, with plays such as "Notes from the Cellar Hole" ( Fjodor Dostojewski ), "Salt Water" and "Port Authority" ( Conor McPherson ), "Kelly Letters" ( Wolf Wondratschek ), "Executor 14" (Adel Hakim), "The woman of his life" ( Boris Pfeiffer , Felix Huby ), "Sex - but with pleasure" ( Franca Rame , Dario Fo , Jacopo Fo), "The solo entertainer" ( Fitzgerald Kusz ), “The announcer of a striptease number doesn't give up” ( Bodo Kirchhoff ), “Novecento” ( Alessandro Baricco ) and others.
  • Expert advice - For a year, Theater Neu-Ulm was responsible for the artistic side of the newly established talented support center for Swabian high school students at the Lessing-Gymnasium Neu-Ulm in the course "Theater - write, stage, act". Since there was no model for this course so far, the theater developed the project in close cooperation with the school officials. The course was first run as a pilot project in the 2010/2011 school year.
