Aubertus Miraeus

Aubertus Miraeus (born November 10, 1573 in Brussels , † October 29, 1640 in Antwerp ; also Aubert le Mire and Aubertus Miräus ) was a church historian and Roman Catholic clergyman .

Life

Miraeus studied at the Universities of Douai and Leuven . In Leuven he was an important student of Justus Lipsius . After completing his studies, he entered the church service, in 1608 became a canon at the Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp and bishop secretary to his uncle Johannes Miraeus , the then bishop of Antwerp . He sent him to the county of Holland in 1610 , where he was supposed to take care of the needs of the Catholics.

In 1611 he became almsman and librarian to the regent of the Netherlands and Archduke Albrecht VII of Habsburg . An activity that enabled him to continue writing. Finally, in 1624 he was appointed dean at the Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp and vicar general of the local bishop Johannes Malderus , the successor of his uncle.

He was buried in the Antwerp Cathedral.
