history

On the Schmitten is on the Topographia Ducatus Montani of Erich Philipp Ploennies from the year 1715 Schmitten referred. The place is marked on the topographical survey of the Rhineland from 1824 as AdSchmidten and on the Prussian first survey from 1843 as Schmitte . The place also bears the name Schmitte on measuring table sheets of the 20th century, and from the second half the name Auf der Schmitten .

In the 19th century, Auf der Schmitten belonged to the suburbs of the Kleine Höhe farmers' houses of the Hardenberg mayor , which was renamed Neviges in 1935 . From 1816 to 1861 it belonged to the Elberfeld district and from 1861 to the old Mettmann district .

The railway line Wuppertal-Vohwinkel-Essen-Überruhr , opened in 1847, was routed past the site by the Prince Wilhelm Railway Company . The provincial road between Elberfeld and Neviges, built in the 1830s and later expanded to state road 427, ran through the town . Until 2003, the road crossed the railway line by means of a barred level crossing. With the expansion to the S-Bahn line , a new crossbar was built for the state road and the level crossing was removed, the old route of the state road is now a dead end.

In 1888 twelve people lived in Auf der Schmitten in two houses. The place is called Schmitte at that time .

In the first half of the 20th century a tram line ran past Auf der Schmitten on Provinzialstraße / Landesstraße 427. It was shut down on August 3, 1952. Due to the regional reform of North Rhine-Westphalia , Neviges came to the city of Velbert at the beginning of 1975 and the eastern suburbs of Neviges to Auf der Schmitten were incorporated into Wuppertal.
