Going upright was the German contribution to the Eurovision Song Contest 1984 in Luxembourg , which was sung by Mary Roos . The song reached 13th place out of 19 participants with 34 points.
Music and lyrics
The song is a lively ballad in E major , which is accompanied by a set of instruments typical of the genre of the time, consisting of a rhythm section (drums, bass, guitar), some keyboard instruments (such as piano and synthesizers) and an orchestral section (strings and winds) becomes. The text is about a person who, despite a failed relationship, remains upright and maintains their pride. She deliberately makes “no scene” for her former partner.

The music is by Michael Reinecke , the text by Michael Kunze . Production was carried out by Werner Böhm and Michael Reinecke. At the song contest it was sung in 14th place. In addition to Roos, only five background singers could be seen on an almost empty stage. Pierre Cao was a conductor. The song reached number 56 in the German charts. Roos also sang the song in English (I'll Walk Tall) and French (Du blues et du bleu) . She led it u. a. also in the ZDF hit parade .
Trivia
In an interview, the singer said that shortly before performing at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1984, she received a call from a woman who told her that she was expecting a child from Mary Roos' then husband Werner Böhm . Thus this song received an unintentionally very personal and autobiographical note for the singer at the competition.
