Rise (alternative TV title: The Rise ) is a Soviet feature film from 1977.

action

The film takes place in the winter of 1942. On the Eastern Front in Belarus , Soviet partisans flee from the Germans in deep snow in a forest. The group also consists of women, children and the elderly. The food has been used up. The Red Army officer Sotnikov and the partisan Rybak are selected to collect food from nearby farms. Sotnikov is seriously ill and struggles to drag himself through the snow. Without Rybak's help, he would have no chance of surviving the long journey. The first farm they reach was completely burned down by the Germans. You won't find any food here. You have to go on. Because they do not want to return to their group without food. They get their first food from an old married couple. There, however, they cannot get food for such a large group as theirs. They think the old man is a collaborator , but let him live. When they encounter a German militia , they almost die, but are still able to flee in dire straits. Now they come to an inhabited farm, where they initially only meet children and can eat their first food. The mother comes back and knows about the danger of harboring partisans. When the militia arrives at the farm, they hide the men in the hayloft. There they are discovered. Sotnikow, Rybak and the woman are captured. The children are left alone.

They are taken to the city where the Germans set up their main camp. There they are interrogated and tortured by the Russian Nazi interrogator Portnow. The terminally ill Sotnikov resists the torture and is silent. He no longer feels fear and shows his interrogator Portnow his human superiority. Rybak seeks a way to go on living and commits treason. Sotnikow, the farmer's wife Demchicha and the young girl Basia are sentenced to death. In the barracks yard, Sotnikov learns of Rybak's betrayal and his admission to the police. The three condemned to death are led up a long mountain to the town square. Four gallows are set up there. The Russian population of the place is said to be present to deter the execution. Rybak serves the Germans as an assistant in the execution.

Rybak can't stand his guilt. After the execution, he looks for a way to escape, but does not find it. He tries to hang himself with his belt. This also fails. He remains stuck in his desperate situation.
