The eyebrow weaver ( Ploceus superciliosus , syn. Pachyphantes superciliosus ) belongs within the family of weaver birds (Ploceidae) to the genus of the bunting weaver (Ploceus).

The bird is found in Africa in Ethiopia , Angola , Benin , Burkina Faso , Burundi , Democratic Republic of the Congo , Ivory Coast , Gabon , Ghana , Guinea , Guinea-Bissau , Cameroon , Kenya , Liberia , Nigeria , Republic of the Congo , Rwanda , Zambia , Senegal , Sierra Leone , Sudan , Tanzania , Togo , Uganda and the Central African Republic

The distribution area includes tropical or subtropical grasslands and savannas , seasonally flooded habitats , also thickets and tree-lined areas and swamps near arable land of 700–1700 m altitude.

The species is 12 cm tall and weighs 19 to 25 g. This medium-sized weaver is strong and short-tailed with a strong, broad-based beak. In the breeding plumage, the male has a yellow crown, yellow to the eye, chestnut-colored towards the forehead and a black mask. The neck, back, wing covers and tail are dashed olive brown. The underside is golden yellow. The female differs in the breeding plumage by a dark parting and broad rust-yellow stripes over the eyes . In the simple dress, the birds are brownish on the top and matt sand-colored on the underside, with a dark parting, a darker eye stripe and a dark eye stripe.

The species is monotypical .

voice

The singing of the male is described as a series of chirping tones "cheerr chrray-chrree-chrray chrree-chrray-chrree" or "trrri-titi-trrrri-titi-tri", while feeding and during the flight it is often described as a whirring chirping.

Way of life

The diet consists mainly of grass seeds and arthropods . The birds are sociable and like to hunt in pairs or in small groups.

The breeding season is between August and October in West Africa, between January and February in Gabon and between July and September in the Congo.

Hazardous situation

The stock is not considered to be at risk ( least concern ).
