The Augsburg Canoe Museum was opened in 2003 on the Eiskanal , a canoe route in the south of the Bavarian city of Augsburg , and its extensive exhibition is dedicated to the history of canoeing in Fuggerstadt.

history

On the ice canal, a large canoe and white water stretch that was built for the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich , the former competition offices, which have not been used for a few years, offered a suitable space for the establishment of a canoe museum, which has been in existence for a long time Time was planned.

The museum was founded in spring and summer 2003 by three experts in the field of canoeing, Gerd Liegel, Erwin Wollenschläger and Gerd Walter from the Augsburg Kayak Association and Kanu Schwaben Augsburg , the canoeing department of TSV Schwaben Augsburg . The museum is equipped with many exhibits that the three had already collected for this purpose over a long period of time. On July 17th, 2003 the museum was opened in the presence of the former mayor Hans Breuer .

exhibition

The extensive collection of exhibits in the Canoe Museum extends over several floors and deals not only with canoeing itself and the associated sports equipment , but also with the history of the sport in Augsburg, which is still known as the “canoe capital of Germany”. For example, three canoe world championships (1957, 1985 and 2003) as well as the canoe competitions of the 1972 Summer Olympics took place in Fuggerstadt. A separate section in the exhibition was dedicated to these major events.

Thomas Schmidt , Olympic champion in 2000 , donated a very special exhibit : he had built a canoe slalom boat for himself for the Olympic Games in Athens (2004) at the Augsburg University of Applied Sciences . He gave this unique piece to the Canoe Museum on June 26, 2007.

The museum also pays great attention to people who have made a name for themselves in canoeing - whether as athletes or in some other way.

The canoe museum is located in the Augsburg planning area Spickel-Herrenbach in the south-east of the city center on the banks of the Lech and can be reached with various city bus routes from Stadtwerke Augsburg and via the nearby Augsburg-Hochzoll train station .
