August Friedrich Danzel (born July 21, 1822 in Hamburg ; † March 24, 1889 ibid) was a German surgeon and head of the Marienkrankenhaus in Hamburg.

Origin and family

Danzel was a son of the Hamburg doctor Friedrich Danzel (1792-1847) and his wife Anna Catharina Westphalen (1786-1849). The philosopher Theodor Wilhelm Danzel (1818–1850) was his older brother. The lawyer Theodor Wilhelm Danzel (1854–1902) was his son.

Live and act

After completing his education at the Johanneum Scholars' School and the Academic Gymnasium in Hamburg, Danzel studied medicine and surgery. He attended the universities of Bonn , Prague , where Franz Pitha was his teacher, Berlin , where Johann Friedrich Dieffenbach and Carl Angelstein were among his teachers, and Göttingen , where Conrad Heinrich Fuchs and Conrad Johann Martin Langenbeck were among his teachers. Danzel completed his studies in 1844 as a doctor of medicine .

After completing his studies, Danzel settled in Hamburg as a doctor and surgeon. After the death of his father in 1847, he took over his practice and continued this, in addition to his other activities, until 1885. During the cholera epidemic of 1848 to 1850, he was given a wide range of activities as a doctor for the poor . Danzel also held the office of doctor of the Female Sickness Association from 1849 . In 1864 he was appointed to the Marienkrankenhaus in Hamburg, where he was promoted to chief physician and head of the hospital. During the Franco-German War he was head physician of a barracks - military hospital in his hometown.

Danzel was a co-founder of the German Society for Surgery founded in Berlin in 1872 , co-founder and board member of the Hamburg Association of the Kaiser Wilhelm Foundation , member and vice-president of the Medical Association in Hamburg, member of the Association for the Care of Wounded and Sick Warriors in the Field , a predecessor of the DRK Landesverband Hamburg e. V. , as well as a corresponding member of the kuk Society of Doctors in Vienna . Together with Erich Martini , Danzel was the introductory representative of the surgical section of the Society of German Natural Scientists and Doctors , in which Danzel presided as the second managing director in 1876. He was also a co-founder and co-editor of the German Journal for Surgery .
