from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

August Essenwein (* 1871 in Nuremberg , Bavaria , † May 4, 1953 in Wörth an der Donau ) was a German court pharmacist and district fire department representative.

Live and act

August Essenwein was born as the son of August Ottmar (knight of) Essenwein in Nuremberg. After leaving school, and the study of pharmacy he came to take over in 1905 to Wörth an der Donau to the former Castle Pharmacy in Ludwigstraße. After a few years, the premises there became too cramped and Essenwein moved the pharmacy to an inn on Wörther Marktplatz, which he had acquired in 1931 and which he had completely rebuilt and fundamentally renovated. As early as 1934, his product range in the now modern pharmacy consisted of 8,000 different items. Pharmacist Essenwein was a great idealist, organizer and businessman and had close ties to his adopted home of Wörth an der Donau .

Court pharmacist

In 1911, August Essenwein was appointed “court pharmacist” and “royal court purveyor” by His Majesty King Carol of Romania . The main reason for this was probably the friendship between the Essenwein family and Field Marshal August von Mackensen , who later became Vice Governor of Romania . The previous regional court pharmacy was used as a court pharmacy for the royal court of Romania. Prince Albert von Thurn und Taxis awarded the pharmacy the title "Princely Thurn- und Taxissche Schlossapotheke" . On the occasion of this award, two coats of arms were attached to the north side of the pharmacy. In addition, the coat of arms of the last Prince Primate and Prince-Bishop Karl Theodor von Dalberg , who founded the pharmacy in Wörth, and the family coat of arms of the Knights of Essenwein, whose descendants ran this pharmacy for 78 years, can be found at the pharmacy .

Wörther Schlossbitter

Even before his time as a pharmacist in Wörth, Essenwein had produced an herbal elixir that was awarded a prize at the international hygiene exhibition in Baden-Baden in 1896 . He brought the recipe for this to his pharmacy in Wörth and established the Wörther Schlossbitter brand there . This herbal liqueur , which matures in oak barrels and is handcrafted, is still in the range of the farm pharmacy today and has achieved national importance.

Club life and home care

Essenwein's great passion was his honorary positions. From 1912 he published the “Wörther People's Calendar” annually, making his homeland known nationwide. He was also a homeland security officer and worked as a local writer for the district office. August Essenwein was a co-founder of the bridge building club, a member of the gymnastics club, the Bavarian Red Cross and a writer in the local forest club. He was also active in agricultural exhibitions and gave ideas for measures to beautify the area. On his initiative, for example, the serpentine staircase on the south side of the mountain to Wörth Castle on the Danube was created .

fire Department

On December 13, 1907, Essenwein joined the Wörth volunteer fire brigade and also contributed financially. With the help of his organizational talent, he founded a fire brigade band in 1924. From 1928 he was deputy district fire department representative of the fire department district Groß-Regensburg-Land and took over regional functions. At the beginning of the 1930s he founded the fire brigade rest home in Bayerisch Gmain and took care of its continued existence even after the war. In 1936 he acquired the first "automobile extinguishing device", a motorized syringe brand Magirus , for the volunteer fire brigade in Wörth an der Donau, and from 1940 took over the post of secretary. After the Second World War he made a living by rebuilding the fire brigade.
