August Heinrich Werner Brandes (born October 21, 1798 in Goslar ; † January 28, 1858 in Braunschweig ) was a German teacher.

life and work

Brandes completed a commercial apprenticeship in Hamburg, which was followed by studies in Braunschweig, Göttingen and Berlin in 1814. After graduating as Dr. phil. From 1823 he taught English and Spanish at the Brunswick Collegium Carolinum . In 1828 he received the title of professor . On April 12, 1825, Brandes opened a private school on Reichsstrasse, which quickly became popular. This secondary school , which was not suitable for high school graduation , was combined with the Martineum and Katharineum in 1828 to form a comprehensive grammar school . Brandes headed the Realinstitut until his death on January 28, 1858.

Afterlife

In the period that followed, the Realinstitut was separated in terms of space and organization, which in 1878 developed into the “Herzogliche Realgymnasium” ( high school ), in 1912 into the “Herzogliche Reform-Realgymnasium” and finally into today's Gymnasium Neue Oberschule .
