August Lydtin (born July 11, 1834 in Bühl , Grand Duchy of Baden, † August 21, 1917 in Baden-Baden ) was a German veterinarian, veterinary officer and animal breeding scientist.

Live and act

He dealt first with pharmacy , then studied veterinary medicine at the veterinary schools in Karlsruhe and Alfort near Paris. After his license to practice medicine he worked as a veterinarian in Saargemünd (Lorraine), from 1862 in the city of Baden and from 1865 here as a district veterinarian. In the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 he was appointed chief medical officer of the 14th Army Corps. This was followed by the appointment as a technical consultant for veterinary questions in the Interior Ministry of the Grand Duchy of Baden . In 1876 he became a state veterinarian and in 1881 an additional advisor for animal breeding. In 1895 he retired. In 1908 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

Lydtin published a large number of larger contributions alone and together with other authors. They dealt with questions of the veterinary system (control of important animal diseases, introduction of meat inspection) and animal breeding (breeding and body measurements of cattle and horses, assessment of animals at exhibitions, etc.). He had a supraregional influence in the animal breeding department of the German Agricultural Society (DLG) and through his work at the Imperial Health Office in Berlin. As a preparer for the establishment of the German Society for Zuchtungskunde (DGfZ) in 1905, he promoted the cooperation of veterinarians and animal breeders in science and practice, but because of his age no longer made himself available for an optional function.
