Johann August Wilhelm Mommsen (born July 25, 1821 in Oldesloe ; † June 18, 1913 in Hamburg ) was a German teacher and classical philologist .

Life

August Mommsen, son of pastor Jens Mommsen and Sophie Elisabeth Krumbhaar, was the younger brother of the historian Theodor Mommsen and the classical philologist Tycho Mommsen . He married Marie Rosalie nee Herzog. The son Wilhelm Mommsen emerged from the marriage and became a magistrate and member of parliament.

After studying classical philology, which he graduated from Kiel University with a doctorate in 1846 , he worked as a teacher, first in Flensburg , then at the secondary school in Hamburg. In 1853 he became a senior teacher at the grammar school in Parchim and in 1864 deputy principal at the cathedral school in Schleswig , in 1868 he received the title of grammar school professor . He wrote numerous treatises on Greek and Roman chronology, including the award-winning commemorative publication Heortologie, which was dedicated to his eldest brother . Antiquarian studies on the urban festivals of the Athenians (Leipzig 1864).
