August Sang
August Sang (born July 27, 1914 in Pärnu , † October 14, 1969 in Tallinn ) was an Estonian poet and literary translator .
life and work
August Sang graduated from Pärnu boys' grammar school in 1932. After his military service he studied from 1934 to 1942 at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Tartu . Several times he had to interrupt his studies in order to earn money.
At the age of eight, August Sang wrote his own poetry. Under the pseudonym Injo , he successfully took part in a literary competition organized by the youth magazine Kevadik in 1933 with his poem Improvisatsioon quick-step tempos . In 1934 he made his literary debut in the cultural magazine Looming . In 1936 his collection of poems Üks noormees otsib õnne was published, with which he achieved his breakthrough. Since then he has also written numerous reviews and treatises on literature. In the late 1930s he joined the Arbujad literary circle . In 1939, Sang's second volume of poems, Müürid , was published, which mainly contained visions of the end of the times .
After the Soviet occupation of Estonia , Sang joined the Estonian Soviet Writers' Union in 1945 , but then distanced himself from it and was expelled in 1950. It was not until 1955 that he was officially allowed to work again as a writer with the approval of the Soviet authorities. A year later he rejoined the Writers' Union.
In addition to his writing activities, August Sang has translated poetry from German , Russian , French and Czech as well as prose , among others by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , Peter Weiss , ETA Hoffmann , Maxim Gorki , Wladimir Majakowski , Franz Kafka , Gottfried Keller , Molière , Egon Erwin Kisch and Lion Feuchtwanger .
