August Bernhard Schuchert (born July 5, 1900 in Mainz , † May 24, 1962 in Rome ) was a German Roman Catholic theologian and archaeologist .

Life

August Schuchert entered the Episcopal Seminary in Mainz in 1921 and studied philosophy and Catholic theology until 1926 . On 20 March 1926 he received the priesthood and was in Bensheim and Bingen in the pastoral care worked. From 1930 to 1933 he studied Christian Archeology and Art History at the Pontifical Academy of Archeology in Rome and in 1933 with a thesis on "Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, founding history and construction of the arch" to Dr. theol. PhD. From 1936 to 1942 Schuchert was a teacher in Mainz. From 1941 to 1954 he was the diocesan curator at the Cathedral and Diocesan Museum in Mainz and its director from 1945 to 1954.

From 1948 to 1953 he held a teaching position at the Department of Church History at the University of Mainz . In 1953 he completed his habilitation in Mainz with the work "The Youth-Jesus Cycle from Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome from the 5th century in its relationship to the Apocrypha" and then worked as a private lecturer . In 1954 he was appointed Professor of Christian Archeology and Art History at the University of Mainz.

From October 18, 1954 to May 24, 1962 he was rector of the priestly college at Campo Santo Teutonico in Rome.

From 1945 to 1962 he was the editor of “Faith and Life: Church Newspaper for the Diocese of Mainz”. Schuchert died of complications from a stroke .
