August Unger

August Unger (born March 24, 1869 in Kemlitz, † December 10, 1945 in Berlin-Zehlendorf ) was a German painter who was best known for interior design using wall painting and glass painting . In addition, he worked as an advertising and commercial graphic artist.

Life

In 1895 he was commissioned by the community of Schönberg, which did not yet belong to Berlin, to produce a large-format, richly decorated and calligraphic congratulatory address on parchment on the occasion of the 80th birthday of the former Reich Chancellor Otto Fürst von Bismarck on April 1, the outer sheet of which had a polychrome vedute of the old one Schöneberg town hall and the coat of arms of Bismarck adorned. In 1898 he was the winner of Ludwig Stollwerck's first competition for designs of Stollwerck collectibles in 1898. The judges were professors Emil Doepler the Elder . J., Woldemar Friedrich , Bruno Schmitz and Franz Skarbina from Berlin as well as a partner in the Stollwerck company. Other award winners were Adolf Münzer from Munich, Oskar Zwintscher from Meissen, Gustav Adolf Closs from Stuttgart, A. Haas from Munich, W. Wulff from Karlsruhe, Helene Schulz from Berlin, Hans Anker from Berlin, A. Bauer jr. from Düsseldorf, PO Engelhard from Munich, A. Höfer from Munich, A. Klingner from Berlin, H. Krause from Berlin, E. Neumann from Munich, FP Schmidt from Dresden, Ad. Wagner from Kassel and P. Wendling from Friedenau.

In a poster design competition in Hanover in 1903 he won for the design of a poster with an elephant motif for Dr. Oetkers baking powder won a first prize.

In 1906/07, Unger had Bruno Schmitz build the “Villa Unger” at Prinz-Friedrich-Leopold-Strasse No. 30 in Berlin-Nikolassee .

In 1911, Unger took part in the first exhibition of the Artists' Association for Glass Painting and Glass Mosaic in the Keller & Reiner Gallery (Berlin), whose members included Unger, Max Pechstein , Peter Behrens , Bruno Paul , and César Klein . The companies Puhl & Wagner and Gottfried Heinersdorff Kunstanstalt (later merged with Puhl & Wagner) were affiliated with the artists' union as “executing institutions” .

  • 1895: Congratulatory address from the community of Schöneberg near Berlin to Prince Bismarck on the occasion of his 80th birthday (opaque color painting on parchment)
  • 1902: Representation of mother earth , "donor of all food and all life", for a presentation by the Stollwerck company at a trade exhibition in Düsseldorf.
  • 1906: Glass paintings and glass mosaic frieze in the Rheingold wine house in Berlin.
  • 1907–11: Foyer window of the town hall in Kiel .
  • 1910/11: Ceiling and wall paintings in the Bremerhaven City Theater .
  • 1911: Interior design of the synagogue on Fasanenstrasse in Berlin.
  • Before 1913: Window of the Völkerschlachtdenkmal in Leipzig.
  • 1912/13: coffered ceiling in the prayer room of the Jewish orphanage in Berlin-Pankow.
