August Vollrath Streubel (born October 16, 1817 in Osterholz , † April 7, 1895 in Berlin-Niederschönhausen ) was a German teacher , ornithologist and zoologist.

Live and act

Streubel's father was a hunter, his mother's name was Charlotte Louise b. Werner. Presumably his father awakened an interest in nature. According to the death certificate, August Vollrath Streubel was born in the Osterholz district of Stendal . At least from 1844 onwards, Streubel has established itself in Blumenstr. 64 settled in Berlin. On June 16, 1858, he married Auguste Emilie, born in Brest in 1811, in the Markuskirche . Scheerbarth. The day of the marriage shows that Streubel was working as a teacher at the Dorotheenstädtische Realschule at the time. He later worked at the Strahlauer Higher Citizens School, where in 1859 he gave a lecture on the subject of A few words about the unreliability of eye care among school children, especially in large cities . His wife died in front of Streubel on July 5, 1889 in their common residence at Grüner Weg 25 in Berlin. After the death of his wife, Streubel moved to Prenzlauer Allee 218, the place where he finally died.

His first publication appeared in 1839 with his article on the position of brachyelytres or staphylins in the natural system in the specialist journal Isis von Oken and the tribe Euplectini or subtribe Euplectitae from the short-winged family, which was new for science . In addition to his teaching activities, he published several natural history works. At least in the 15th volume of the General Encyclopedia of Sciences and Arts , a project by Johann Samuelersch and Johann Gottfried Gruber , Streubel contributed some parts (e.g. Pentacidae, Pentastomum or Pentastoma, Pericallus etc.). He dedicated his German translation of Georges Cuvier's Le règne animal to Alexander von Humboldt and Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg . In 1848 he was the first to describe the smoke swift ( Cypseloides fumigatus ). The type specimen was in the Berlin Museum and was collected by Johann Natterer . With the species he introduced the new genus Cypseloides . In the same article he first described the moss nest salangans ( Aerodramus salangana ). With Der Conservator he wrote a book in 1848 that was to serve as a guide to taxidermy . This book appeared again in 1851 as a new edition under the title Instructions to collect natural objects from all kingdoms .

Dedication names

In 1861 Gustav Hartlaub used the name Cypselus streubelii for a bird that Theodor von Heuglin had collected. Since he compared the type specimen with Cypselus abessynicus Streubel , 1848, this name is a dedication for Streubel. Later it turned out that the name was a synonym for the Cape Swift ( Apus caffer ( Lichtenstein, MHC , 1823)). Streubel's name is also a synonym for the house sailor subspecies ( Apus affinis galilejensis ( Antinori , 1855)).
