August Werner (born March 6, 1896 in Kiel ; † October 20, 1968 there ) was a German football player . He played both in the club and in the national team as a right defender .
Life and association
August Werner, the younger brother of Adolf "Adsch" Werner , the most important goalkeeper of the German national team before the First World War and Friedrich Werner , was born in Kiel. Shortly after the end of the First World War , he came to the storks in Kiel, as the Holstein Kiel players were called everywhere. After only one year he moved to Hamburger SV , where he played with Hugo Fick , the brother of national player Willi Fick . The following year he went back to Kiel, where he played until the end of his career. Although he was a right defender , he was a feared penalty taker and, together with Theo Lagerquist, was indispensable in the Kiel defense . After the Second World War , Werner was Holstein Kiel's league chairman for a while. He probably died on October 20th, according to other sources also on October 22nd, in Kiel.
National team
In 1925 Werner made his national team debut on a trip to Scandinavia. He played an international match on June 21 against Sweden and on June 26, 1925 against Finland . While the game against Sweden was lost 0-1 in Stockholm , five days later they won 5-3 in Helsinki . Werner benefited from the disputes between the two southern clubs 1. FC Nürnberg and SpVgg Fürth , whose players sometimes did not even come due to an ongoing conflict and so newcomers had to be constantly deployed.
