August Wolf (born April 20, 1842 in Weinheim , died February 19, 1915 in Venice ) was a German painter . He is best known for his copies of Venetian paintings from the 16th century for the collection of Count Schack .

Life

August Wolf was born on April 20, 1842 in Weinheim an der Bergstrasse . He first trained as a goldsmith and then attended the art school in Nuremberg . In 1869 he came to Munich . There Franz von Lenbach introduced him to the writer and art collector Adolf Friedrich Graf von Schack . In 1870 Wolf moved to Venice to make copies of paintings by old masters on behalf of the Count.

Wolf stayed in Venice and married Emilia Ferrari there. The couple had two children: Theodor , who became a painter like his father, and Hermann Friedrich (1876–1948), who became known as a composer under the name Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari .

Act

Wolf initially copied the main works of the churches of Venice on behalf of Schack in original size. By 1881 he made 41 copies for the Count's collection. Later he also took on orders from other people from Germany and America. In addition to copies, Wolf also painted his own pictures. In it he imitated the style and themes of Venetian painting of the 16th century.

Museums

Wolf's works from the Schack collection were given a separate two-storey hall with a skylight as an exhibition space in the new Schackgalerie built in 1909 . With the entire collection, these works passed into the possession of the Free State of Bavaria in 1939 and have been part of the Bavarian State Painting Collections ever since . They belong to the holdings of the Neue Pinakothek and the Schackgalerie, which has been known as the Schack Collection since it was renovated, redesigned and reopened in 2009 . In the latter, a selection of Wolf copies together with copies of Franz von Lenbach in the largest hall of the house, called Kopiensaal issued.
