August von Druffel

August von Druffel (born August 21, 1841 in Koblenz , † October 23, 1891 in Munich ) was a German historian who worked as an employee of the historical commission at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences through his source editions on the political history of the Holy Roman Empire in the 16th century. Life

He studied history in Innsbruck, Berlin and Göttingen and received his doctorate in 1862 with a thesis on Emperor Heinrich IV and his sons . His teachers were Julius von Ficker in Innsbruck , Philipp Jaffé in Berlin and Georg Waitz in Göttingen , who was most important to him. In Innsbruck he was one of the three founders of the Corps Rhaetia .

After his participation as a Landwehr officer in a Westphalian regiment in the Main Campaign of 1866 and the war against France in 1870/71, he qualified as a private lecturer at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . In 1875 he became an extraordinary and in 1884 a full member of the Royal Bavarian Academy of Sciences . In 1885 he became a full professor in Munich. Probably as a result of wounds from his participation in the Franco-German War in 1870/71, von Druffel fell seriously ill and died at the age of 50.

As a member of the Historical Commission in Munich, he processed the Wittelsbach correspondence. Particularly significant are his contributions to the history of the empire, which Carl Adolph Cornelius described as “exemplary work, distinguished by the abundance and accuracy of the accompanying comments”. They were published by Karl Brandi and Walter Goetz after Druffel's death . Both lived in Munich in his house with Luise von Druffel .
