Augusta Jensen (born January 2, 1858 as Augusta Albertina Eliesson in the municipality of Bro, Värmland , Sweden ; † August 8, 1936 in Karlstad , Värmland) was a Swedish genre , landscape , portrait and still life painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Augusta Eliesson, daughter of the sawmill owner Andreas Eliesson on Agnhammar near Grums and his wife Beata Anderson, traveled to Düsseldorf on her own in 1877 at the age of 19 . There she took private lessons from the Norwegian genre painters Bengt Nordenberg and Vincent Stoltenberg Lerche until 1880 . Then she returned to her homeland, where she married Niels Christian Jensen (* 1862), a Danish business partner of her father, in 1883. In the same year she went on a study trip to Paris . The following year she traveled to Italy via Nice , where she met Genoa , Florence and Pisavisited and spent a long time in Rome . She also visited the island of Capri during this time.

With her husband, Danish consul for Värmland from 1905 , and their five sons, including the later sculptor Peter Jensen (1892–1977), Augusta Jensen lived in a luxuriously furnished villa on Orrholmen near Karlstad. The landlady, who was interested in music and was a pianist herself, gave music evenings there. Their salons were a focal point of social life. Her guests included the Lutheran bishop Claes Herman Rundgren (1819–1906), the writer Selma Lagerlöf and the poet Gustaf Fröding . Shortly after her death, on Christmas 1936, the villa burned down, and much of her oeuvre was also destroyed by flames.
