Auguste (actually Augustin ) Hippolyte Collard came from a humble background. He first worked as a gilder of wooden picture frames in Paris. He continued this activity successfully in Poitiers from 1839 to 1853 .

Out of enthusiasm for chemistry, Collard had already been interested in photography from 1842. The chemist and photography pioneer Claude Félix Abel Niépce de Saint-Victor probably belonged to his circle of friends. Collard exhibited the first daguerreotypes in 1850 . From 1854 he lived again in Paris and gave up his work as a gilder in order to devote himself entirely to photography. First he worked in a studio as a partner of Léon Wulff , where he also taught photography. In 1855 he opened with his brothers Jules Collard (1829–1867) and Victor Collard (1832–1885) the Atelier central de Photographie on Paris Boulevard de Strasbourg No. 53. In the same year he showed photographs at the Paris World Exhibition , where he held an honorable one Received mention for his work. The photo studio was initially known for portraits, followed by the reproduction of works of art.

Auguste Hipollyte Collard founded Collard & Cie. In 1857 . and started taking pictures of the Paris bridges over the Seine . Until 1870 he photographed all Paris bridges and worked with the Ministry of Agriculture, Trade and Public Affairs , the Administration des Ponts et Chaussées and the Travaux Publics de la Ville de Paris . He also photographed buildings on the French railways such as bridges, aqueducts and train stations. He often created chronological sequences of images of new buildings, which documented the various construction progress up to completion, and created photo folders for this purpose. In 1859 he exhibited his architectural photos in an exhibition of the Société française de photographie . He was also a member of the Société des Amis des Arts et de l'Industrie and the Société française des architecture photographie, historique et monumentales .

Collard worked with various collodion processes for his photos and initially used salt paper for the prints . From 1860 he used albumen paper , for the production of which he developed a clay bath. After showing his work in Brussels, Amsterdam and London, he exhibited his industrial photographs at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1867 . Since then he has had the honorable title of Photographe des Ponts et Chaussées . In 1871 he photographed the barricades of the Paris Commune and documented the damage to the building after the fighting in May of that year.

In 1883 Collard was one of the founders of the Le Progrès photographique magazine . He wrote numerous articles on technical questions in photography and was editor of the journal until 1895.
