The Augustinian Monastery in Dresden was founded in 1404 by Margrave Wilhelm I in Altendresden . The monastery was located between Klostergasse and the later Jägerhof .

income

In contrast to the Dresden Franciscans, the Augustinian monastery was wealthy. Wilhelm I furnished it with possessions, including the village of Weißig . Later the monastery also had income from Kaditz , Serkowitz , Pieschen , Mickten and Radebeul . In the Dresden area, the Augustinians also owned properties in Loschwitz , Blasewitz and the Great Garden as well as in Dohna . Furthermore, the Upper Lusatian estates Cosel and Sella belonged to the monastery until 1525 .

history

When the Hussites conquered Altendresden in 1429, they burned the monastery down. In 1485, the Augustinian hermits received patronage over the Epiphany Church and the Epiphany School associated with it . Until then, the monks had held their services in the Antonius Chapel, which was in front of Altendresden. Martin Luther inspected the monastery in 1516 in his capacity as district vicar of the order.

Duke George the Bearded warned the monastery in 1521 because of sympathy with the Reformation movement . In 1539, however, the monks submitted to the orders of the Lutheran visitors. The monastery property passed to the city or was bought by private individuals. The Altendresdner Council granted the former monks a pension for the rest of their lives. The monastery was demolished in 1545 and the stones were used, among other things, to build the Dresden fortifications .
