Augustine Erthel
Augustinus Erthel OSB (actually Johannes Vitus Erthel ; * October 8, 1714 in Wülfershausen ; † October 13, 1796 in Fulda ) was a German Benedictine of the Fulda Imperial Abbey , educator , theological author and editor, song poet and composer.
Life
Erthel joined the Fulda Abbey in 1733 and took the religious name Augustine. After several professional positions as a pastor, he returned to his convent in 1760 and became subprior in 1765 . He was the prince-fulda clergyman . Erthel was one of the leading figures of the Catholic Enlightenment in the Fulda Monastery under Prince Abbot-Bishop Heinrich von Bibra , whose aim was to bring the faith and liturgy of the church closer to the understanding of the people and to raise popular education on a Catholic foundation. For this purpose Erthel wrote a catechism and numerous textbooks and edification books in German, most of which were printed without naming his name.
In 1778 he published the new Fulda diocesan hymn book The Christian Singing in the spirit of the Catholic Church , which appeared in 48 editions and remained in use until 1890. Of the 242 songs, he wrote most of the lyrics himself and composed most of the melodies. 14 of these songs are still in the praise of God property of the diocese of Fulda , including the Christmas carol Auf, Christians, sings festive songs , which is also popular in other dioceses .
