Augusto Rostagni (born September 17, 1892 in Cuneo , † August 21, 1961 in Muzzano ) was an Italian classical philologist .

Rostagni began studying ancient history and classical philology at the University of Turin in 1911 . His academic teachers included Gaetano De Sanctis , Ettore Stampini and Vittorio Ciàn . After completing his studies, he was a high school teacher in Bra from 1920 to 1923 . In 1923 he became a libero docente for Greek literature in Turin. In 1925 he moved to the University of Cagliari as Professor of Greek Literature , then to the University of Padua , in 1926 to the University of Bologna and in 1928 back to Turin, where he was initially Professor of Comparative Literature with a focus on ancient literature and from 1930 Professor of Latin literature was. Rostagni was a member of the Accademia delle Scienze di Torino and since 1955 of the Accademia dei Lincei .

Rostagni researched primarily on literary theoretical topics. He was particularly fond of ancient aesthetics and poetics, as well as Hellenistic poetry and the Greco-Roman history of religion . He is considered to be the most important exponent of idealism in Italian classical studies in the first half of the 20th century. He rejected a positivist as well as the purely rhetorical-antiquarian view of antiquity . His work demonstrated the originality of Latin literature compared to ancient Greek poetry, as well as the aesthetic value of Hellenistic poetry , both areas that until then were often viewed as less important. With Gaetano De Sanctis he founded the Rivista di Filologia e di Istruzione Classica è una rivista letteraria di studi classico in 1923 , which he published for almost 40 years until his death. He was in competition with Giorgio Pasquali , who ultimately had a greater impact and aftereffect than Rostagni. Adolfo Sarti was one of his academic students .
