On April 4, 1793, he married the daughter of the Scottish nobleman John Murray, 4th Earl of Dunmore , Lady Augusta Murray (1768-1830) without the knowledge of both parents. His former fellow student at the University of Göttingen, Ernst Friedrich Herbert zu Münster , brought the two of them from Rome to London on behalf of the English court . In 1794 he was sent out of the country again, accompanied by Münster to Italy, where both of them studied art and culture in different places for the next five years, but also maintained relationships at the Italian courts. On November 27, 1801 he was given the hereditary titles Duke of Sussex , Earl of Inverness and Baron Arklow . The titles belonged to the Peerage of the United Kingdom . In 1813 he was elected the first Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of England . He held this office until his death in 1843. From 1830 to 1838 he was President of the Royal Society in London. In 1830 the Bavarian Academy of Sciences made him an honorary member. Since 1831 he was also an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh . At the suggestion of Alexander von Humboldt , he had geomagnetic stations set up worldwide from 1836. After Augusta's death, on May 2, 1831, he married Lady Cecilia Buggin (1793–1873), who was raised in 1840 to Duchess of Inverness .

August Friedrich was buried on May 5, 1843 in the Kensal Green Cemetery , as was his second wife after her death in 1873. Since he did not leave a legitimate heir, his titles of nobility expired upon his death.
