Johann Albrecht Friedrich August Meineke (also Augustus Meineke; born December 8, 1790 in Soest , † December 12, 1870 in Berlin ) was a German classical philologist .

Life

August Meineke was born on December 8, 1790 as the son of the director of the grammar school in Soest. Like his father, he attended the Pforta State School from 1805 to 1810. He then studied classical philology with Gottfried Hermann at the University of Leipzig for three semesters and was appointed professor at the Conradinum in Jenkau (near Danzig) on his recommendation . In 1814 he moved to the Academic Gymnasium in Danzig, where he was the Gymnasium rector from 1817 . From 1826 to 1856 he was rector of the Joachimsthal'schen Gymnasium in Berlin . His life's work was the edition of the Fragmenta Comicorum Graecorum (1839-1857), an unsurpassed edition of the fragments of all Greek comedy poets at the time.

August Meineke died just four days after his 80th birthday on December 12, 1870 in Berlin and was buried in the local cathedral cemetery I on Liesenstrasse . The grave has not been preserved.

Meinekestrasse in Charlottenburg and Wilmersdorf , which runs between Kurfürstendamm and Schaperstrasse and ends at what was then Joachimsthal'schen Gymnasium, has been named since 1899 .
