The Aurangabad district ( Marathi : औरंगाबाद जिल्हा ) is one of 35 districts of the state of Maharashtra in India .
The city of Aurangabad is the administrative seat of the district. The last census in 2011 showed a total population of 3,701,282 people.

The urban population makes up 43.77 percent of the total population. A clear vast majority of the population are Hindus. Muslims are a significant minority. Another large minority are the Buddhists. In 2001, of the 2,897,013 inhabitants, 2,030,181 were Hindus (70.07 percent), 569,516 Muslims (19.66 percent) and 247,222 Buddhists (8.53 percent).

The most populous town in the district is Aurangabad with almost 900,000 residents. Other major cities with a population of more than 20,000 people are Sillod , Vaijapur , Paithan , Kannad and Gangapur .
