Aurelio García y García , (* 1834 in Lima , Peru , † 1888 in Callao , Peru), was Rear Admiral of the Peruvian Navy .

Garcia y Garcia was born in Lima in 1834 as the third of seven children of the married couple José Antonio García González and Josefa García Urrutia. In 1864 he married Teresa Lastres Riglos with whom he had seven children (Héctor, María Teresa, Nicanor, Elena, Angélica, Lucila, Mercedes and Aurelio García y Lastres).

Political and military career

From 1852 Garcia y Garcia was a seaman in the Peruvian Navy and in the merchant fleet. In 1856 he was part of the team that transported the British- built steam warship Tumbes to Peru. In 1862 it became the commandant of the brigantine Admiral Guise, in 1865 the command of the ironclad Independence.

In 1872 Garcia y Garcia established diplomatic relations with Japan and China for Peru .

Saltpeter War

During the Saltpeter War from 1879 to 1884 Garcia y Garcia was in command of the second naval division (Segunda División Naval), which consisted of the corvette Union and the gunboat Pilcomayo. In 1881 he was wounded in the battles of San Juan and Miraflores. As a Peruvian delegate he took part in the unsuccessful peace talks between Peru and Chile from the USS Corvette Lackawana.
