The Forbach compensation basin is a dam on the Murg in Forbach in the Black Forest , Baden-Württemberg . As part of the Rudolf-Fettweis-Werk , it serves as the lower basin of the Schwarzenbachwerk pumped storage power plant and at the same time as an equalization basin for the Murgwerk (Murgkraftwerk) , which uses the water from the Murg reservoir to generate electricity. In addition, the gradient in the low-pressure plant on the weir is used to generate electricity.

The dam

The barrier structure of the equalization basin is a weight dam with a height of 19 m above the foundation. The lake therefore counts as a large dam .

The operator of the system, which was built by Badenwerk Karlsruhe between 1914 and 1918 , is its successor, EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg .

Function in the pumped storage power plant

If there is an excess of electricity generation (mainly at night), water is pumped up from the Murgtalsperre in Kirschbaumwasen via the power house in Forbach into the Schwarzenbachtalsperre . In the event of a lack of energy (during the day), water from the Schwarzenbach reservoir is drained to generate electricity via the turbines of the Rudolf-Fettweis factory in the compensation basin in Forbach, which releases the fluctuating water volumes to the river in a controlled manner.

Low pressure unit

The Murg River is dammed in the reservoir of the equalization basin. Further electricity can be generated in a low-pressure plant from the water level, the usable height of which fluctuates between 3.5 and 10 m due to the pump storage operation. With an expanded flow rate of 29 m³ / s, two Kaplan tubular turbines and the two generators generate a maximum of 2.5 MW.
