The highways ( Albanian  Autostrada or Autostradë or Autoudha / ë , Serbian Ауто-путеви Auto-putevi ) are a type of road in Kosovo . They serve national and international traffic.

The motorway network in Kosovo is one of the youngest in Europe and is currently under construction. Due to the Kosovo war and the subsequent UNMIK administration, little money was invested in maintaining and expanding the road system in Kosovo. Only after independence from Serbia did the Kosovar government develop concrete plans for the expansion of the road system.

Overview of the main roads of Kosovo

At the moment there are motorways with a length of almost 200 kilometers, about 87.1 kilometers are being built. The planned motorway network is around 120 kilometers. The most important and longest motorway connection is the west-east connection R 7 .

The International Motor Vehicle Insurance Card is not recognized in Kosovo. Foreigners must therefore purchase a Kosovar insurance card at the border. A 15-day insurance for 30 euros can be taken out for transit.

The expressways (Albanian Rruga nacionale or Rrugë nacionale or Magjistralja / Magjistralë , Serbian Ауто-путеви / Auto-putevi ) are a type of road in Kosovo. They serve national and international traffic. There are currently three expressways in Kosovo. The most important and longest expressway connections are the west-east connections M-9 and M-25 .

toll

There is currently no toll on the motorway. However, the exits have already been built in such a way that a closed, route-dependent toll system can be set up.

rule

Construction of a Kosovar motorway

A Kosovar motorway usually consists of two directional lanes with at least two lanes and one hard shoulder.

lighting

The Kosovar highways are completely illuminated within the exits. In addition, only sections of the route near major cities and motorway junctions are illuminated.

regulate

The maximum permissible speed for cars without a trailer is 120 km / h. No more than 80 km / h is allowed on roads that are construction-related.

numbering

National roads

Signs for the M-25

The Kosovar national roads and motorway-like roads (expressways) are numbered with the letter M (for Magjistralja , in German Magistralstraße ) followed by a hyphen or N (for Rruga nacionale , in German national road ) and a one or two-digit number. Subordinate national roads also have a point followed by a single-digit number. So far, the numbering of the national roads still corresponds to the Serbian or the old Yugoslav number. For this reason, the number assignment within Kosovo is very inconsistent with large jumps between the numbers. It is not yet clear whether this numbering will be reformed.

Highways

Signs for the R 7

New highways under construction or planned are numbered with the letter R (for route ) followed by a space and a single-digit number.
