The Autostrada R 6 ( Albanian for motorway R 6 ) is a 60 kilometer long motorway in Kosovo . It connects the capital Pristina via Ferizaj and Han i Elezit with the North Macedonian capital Skopje . It is also known under the names Autostrada Prishtinë – Han i Elezit , Autostrada Prishtinë – Shkup or Autostrada Arbën Xhaferi . In memory of the former Macedonian politician of the same name, who was Albanian , the motorway is nicknamed Arbën Xhaferi .

Routing

The motorway shortly after the Pristina junction

The motorway follows the course of the existing M-2 from Pristina via Ferizaj and Han i Elezit, but does not replace them. At the border, the motorway will then merge into the planned North Macedonian M3 motorway . The total length of the route is 60 kilometers. There are also plans to branch off the R 7.1 at Lipjan , which will lead via Gjilan to the Serbian village of Končulj .

The motorway was divided into two sections. A few kilometers of the motorway were opened in October 2015. The entire motorway should be completed by 2018. The costs amounted to around 600 million euros.

On December 31, 2016, the first 25 kilometers to Babush were opened to traffic. On December 22nd, 2017, the second section of the eleven-kilometer route to Bibaj near Ferizaj was opened to traffic. The third section after Doganaj took place in spring 2018. On May 29, 2019, the last section from Doganaj to the border in Han i Elezit was opened. The Minister of Infrastructure Pal Lekaj attended the opening. In addition to him, numerous politicians were there, such as the Kosovar President Hashim Thaçi , the North Macedonian Prime Minister Zoran Zaev and the Montenegrin Prime Minister Duško Marković .
