The Autodromo dell'Umbria "Mario Umberto Borzacchini" (also Autodromo di Magione ) is an Italian motorsport racing circuit in Magione in the province of Perugia .

history

Construction of the facility began in 1972 on behalf of some motorsport enthusiasts (namely Lorenzo Rondini, Giulio Capolsini, Umberto Mannocchi, Paolo Bietoloni, Gianni Moretti, Francesco Terradura and Giuseppe Tarpani), who together had already formed the “Scuderia Carpine” team. The original route was 1650 meters long and was a narrow and technical route. The opening of the course took place on April 23, 1973. Formula 3 races as well as motorcycle races were held regularly on the Autodromo di Magione, as the track was then called. In the late 1970s, the Scuderia Carpine range was put up for sale for financial reasons. A consortium , led by the “Automobile Club Perugia”, bought the system and renamed it Autodromo dell'Umbria. It was composed of Umbria originating Mario Umberto Borzacchini , one of the most famous Italian racers of the 1920s and 1930s, honored in the name.

In 1986 the line was rebuilt. A kart track was added, but was no longer used from 1990 onwards because it was considered too dangerous and too fast. Then the line was rebuilt in the 1990s. The safety standards were increased and the grandstands enlarged. In addition to various other changes, the pit systems were also renewed. The most important change, however, was probably the extension of the runway to its current distance of 2507 meters.

On April 13, 1998, Sandro Corsini was killed in a Formula Junior race . On April 26, 2008 Giovanni Olivieri had a fatal accident in a motorcycle race of the Coppa Italia Stock 600 .

The Henry Morrogh Racing Drivers School used the track starting in the 1980s until 2010 . A well-known visitors to this school was the future Indy 500 winner and Formula 1 - World Champion Jacques Villeneuve .

In 2014 and 2015 a round of the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series took place on the course.

Nowadays, national motorcycle and automobile races are mainly held on the track.
