The autonomous bus in Bad Birnbach is a test operation for autonomous driving and is also operated in the public transport of the Rottal-Inn district as line 7015.

business

In Bad Birnbach, the Deutsche Bahn subsidiary Regionalbus Ostbayern GmbH has been testing Germany's first driverless bus under the ioki brand since April 29, 2017. This is done in cooperation with the Rottal-Inn district, the market town of Bad Birnbach, TÜV Süd and the vehicle manufacturer.

In principle, the autonomous bus does not require any new infrastructure and is guided by GPS , laser scanning and odometry . Vodafone transmits the GPS data . The tolerance to the programmed route is two centimeters. If a vehicle deviates further, an emergency brake is triggered. The same applies if an obstacle stands in his way. This is determined with sensors that secure the vehicle in all directions.

For safety reasons, there is still a driver in the vehicle during the test, who can intervene manually and, if necessary, also control the vehicle. The ride does not cost anything during the trial operation, and a ticket is not required.

First test phase

Regular passenger service started on October 25, 2017. It is run as line 7015. The line was operated with a vehicle and ran every 20 minutes from the “New Market Square” via the “Artrium” stop to “Kurallee” at Rottal Terme . The route length was 700 meters. It was driven at about 8 km / h. With operation from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., this enabled 30 trips per day.

In the first year of operation, 20,000 people were transported. There was an accident: A slight collision with a parking car that damaged the body.

Second test phase

Originally planned for summer 2018, but not until October 7, 2019, the line was extended beyond the Rottal Terme stop via the Gries stop to the Bad Birnbach train station, which is far from the center . This expanded operation was opened by Federal Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer and Berthold Huber , Board Member for Passenger Transport at Deutsche Bahn AG. This means that for the first time the bus will also travel around 400 m of Bahnhofsstraße and thus a section of public road traffic. The total travel distance is a little over 2000 m. When traveling along the approximately 500 m of Bahnhofstrasse , the bus triggers a traffic light system for the time it is in public traffic, which imposes a speed limit on other road traffic of 30 km / h.

For this second phase of the trial operation, two new buses are used that are approved for a top speed of 15 km / h. The maximum permissible speed is to be increased to 25 km / h at a later date. They are now painted in Deutsche Bahn's public transport red, have six seats, ramps for wheelchair users and run from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Since two buses are always in use at the same time, a 20-minute cycle can also be offered on the now longer route.

The safety devices in the vehicles react very sensitively to deviations from the target, so that operations are stopped in the event of heavy rain, snowfall or a lot of leaves on the route. There is then a "road replacement service" with conventional vehicles.
