The railway line Passau Hbf – Neumarkt-Sankt Veit (also: Rottalbahn and Rotttalbahn ) is a single-track, non-electrified branch line in southeastern Bavaria. With a length of 97 km, it is the longest branch line in Bavaria.

topography

The route runs through two very different natural spaces. The section from Passau to Sulzbach am Inn crosses the Neuburg Forest , a spur of the Bavarian Forest that crosses the Danube . The rest of the way follows the Rott River for almost its entire length. The west-east running Rottal interrupts the Isar-Inn hill country with an average width of 2 km and enables a favorable line layout. The connecting route from Neumarkt to Mühldorf am Inn then leads through the hilly country from the Rott valley into the Inn valley. The different landscape conditions are reflected in the travel times: In 2016 a regional train, according to the hourly schedule, takes 41 minutes for the first 26 km from Passau to Sulzbach am Inn , which is only 14.1 km away as the crow flies ; from there 84 minutes for the further 71 km to Neumarkt.

history

construction

The route was built in two stages. After construction began in 1878, the 63 km long Neumarkt-Sankt Veit-Pocking section was opened as a secondary line on September 1, 1879 . On October 4, 1883, she was connected to Landshut. After the approval of the eastern extension in 1884, the 35 km long section Pocking-Passau was completed in 1887 and 1888. From October 6, 1888, the line was completely passable. On that day, the test train with a D VII and seven passenger cars left Passau at 9.15 a.m. At 2.30 p.m. the train started its return journey in Pocking.

This second section was designed as a local railway . On October 15, 1888, the local railway was opened with two mixed trains in each direction. With the completion of the Pocking – Kößlarn section on December 1, 1914, the line was given a direct connection to Simbach am Inn.

Modernization measures

In order to be able to introduce hourly intervals on the route, it was extensively refurbished, and the Massing stop was expanded to become a crossing station for around EUR 2.3 million . Other crossing stations that are regularly used every hour are Fürstenzell, Pocking and Pfarrkirchen, and on some trains also Sulzbach and Eggenfelden. The Eggenfelden Mitte stop was newly established near the center , the Bad Höhenstadt, Neukirchen am Inn and Passau-Neustift stops and the Fürstenzell train station were modernized. In order to achieve all of this, 10 million euros were invested in expanding the line from 2002 onwards. In addition, Sulzbach am Inn, Ruhstorf an der Rott, Neustift b. Passau and Engertsham also renewed. A total of a further 200,000 euros were available for this, 140,000 euros of which for the Sulzbach am Inn train station, which was completed in September 2009. From the middle of November to the beginning of December 2008, the entire line was closed in sections and the superstructure was renewed, several level crossings were abandoned and others were given technical security.

business

When the company opened, three pairs of trains traveled the route every day. It was initially divided into two routes according to the schedule , which met in parish churches . The number of trains increased, but after the First World War the train density was again only three pairs of trains.

In the spring of 1933 the railcars of the class VT 133 (“Wismar”), built in only a few units, started operating on the line from Passau main station. The timetable from 1934 shows that at that time three of the four passenger trains were driven by railcars every day. They covered the distance in 159 minutes, the steam train, on the other hand, took 240 minutes, of which 12 and 15 minutes in Pocking and Pfarrkirchen alone were required to get water.

In 1977 there were efforts to shut down the line. Mainly because of the tourism in the Lower Bavarian spa triangle , despite the unfavorable route, it was abandoned.

On September 1, 1979, the 100th anniversary of the existence of the Neumarkt-Sankt Veit-Pocking railway line was celebrated in Pfarrkirchen with particular festivity, also as a protest against the closure plans. Uerdingen rail buses of the VT 98 series mostly provided regular passenger traffic in the second half of the 20th century before they were replaced by class 628 railcars .

Since the opening of the Mühldorf line star in 1994, almost a two-hour cycle was offered on the line until December 2009, and from 2001 onwards by the Südostbayernbahn . The trains have been running every hour since December 2009. Passenger traffic on the route is to continue to be provided by the DB subsidiary Südostbayernbahn until the end of 2024.

Wrong with the trains "Rottaler Country" and "Rottaler spa triangle" coaches to and from Hamburg and Dortmund . The offer was aimed at the spa guests of the spa triangle in the districts of Passau and Rottal-Inn. Most recently, a group of through coaches from the Intercity Rottaler Land ran between Hamburg and Mühldorf am Inn via Passau on Saturdays . In terms of tariffs, this train was assigned to the regional express train type and, according to the timetable, ran a regional train operated by a railcar on the other days of the week. The train was usually by a diesel locomotive of the DB Class 218 drawn. This traffic was discontinued when the timetable changed in December 2014.

Accidents

On January 8, 1916 at 7:30 p.m., passenger train 81 fell down an embankment due to a dam slide between Pfenningbach and Neustift. The train driver died, the stoker was seriously injured, four officers and eight passengers were slightly injured.

Accidents occurred again and again on the approximately 100 non-barrier level crossings.

  • On August 14, 2008, two scooter drivers died in different places.
  • Another fatal accident occurred on July 16, 2009 when a pensioner disregarded a closed barrier in Pocking. This level crossing had only been put into operation two weeks earlier.

Current operation

Scheduled traffic

line route Tact Vehicle use
RB Passau Hbf  - Neustift (near Passau) - Fürstenzell - Ruhstorf (Rott) - Pocking - Eggenfelden - Mühldorf (- Rosenheim) hourly Series 628

An average of 2,600 passengers use the Rottalbahn every day. This is an increase of 34 percent compared to the time when trains ran every two hours. Individual trips offer direct connections to other endpoints of the line star. Scheduled train crossings take place in Massing, Eggenfelden, Pfarrkirchen, Pocking and Fürstenzell as well as in individual cases in Sulzbach (Inn).

Tariff

In principle, the local transport tariffs and offers of DB Regio apply , to which the Südostbayernbahn operating the traffic on the route as the RegioNetz is subject. In addition, the Südostbayernbahn offers its own flat-rate tickets both for the entire area and for parts of its route network. Between Passau and Karpfham the railway is integrated into the Verkehrsgemeinschaft Landkreis Passau , between Bayerbach and Massing the tariff regulations of the Verkehrsgemeinschaft Rottal-Inn apply . The tariffs of the respective transport community apply for journeys exclusively within the specified route sections.

Special trips

Several times a year the historic rail bus set of the 798/998 series of the Passauer Eisenbahnfreunde (PEF) e. V. used. The 798 706-8 is the last VT 798 to operate the route in 1994 as a scheduled passenger train. Furthermore, the steam locomotives traveled 638.1301 and 657.2770 of the Austrian Society for railway history ( ÖGEG ) with biaxial Spantenwagen occasionally the route. The introduction of the hourly service in December 2009 made special trips very difficult due to the limited route capacities.
