Melvyn Kenneth "Mel" Smith (born December 3, 1952 in London ; † July 19, 2013 ibid) was a British author , comedian , actor , producer and director .

Life

He was already producing and staging plays during his time at Oxford University . He was then from 1979 to 1982 as a writer for the satirical television program Not the Nine O'Clock News on the BBC2 , where he starred with Rowan Atkinson , Pamela Stephenson and Griff Rhys Jones . From 1982 to 1998 Mel Smith played together with Griff Rhys Jones in a total of 27 episodes of the comedy series Alas Smith & Jones (from 1989 only Smith & Jones , in German third programs Auweia! Smith & Jones ). The title was a reference to the US series aka Smith and Jones . Mel Smith and Griff Rhys Jones played the main roles in the film adaptation of the novel Puppenmord, based on the novel of the same name by Tom Sharpe .

On July 19, 2013, Smith died in his London home of a heart attack.
