The Avançon is a right tributary of the Rhone in the Swiss canton of Vaud . It arises from the confluence of the two source streams Avançon d'Anzeindaz and Avançon de Nant and drains a section of the Vaudois Alps . Together with the Avançon d'Anzeindaz, the Avançon is 18 km long. The catchment area of the Avançon has an area of about 90 km². The river name probably goes back to the Gallic word aventia (stream, source).

geography

The Avançon d'Anzeindaz rises on the parish of Bex at around 2000 m above sea level. M. in the area of the Saumpass Pas de Cheville south of the massif of the Diablerets . It flows west, crosses the Anzeindaz Alp and then forms a valley between the limestone peaks of Culan in the north and Argentine in the south.

The Avançon de Nant, on the other hand, draws its water from the Glacier des Martinets , a small glacier on the northeast slope of the Dent de Morcles . The mountain stream flows north through the Vallon de Nant at the foot of the Grand Muveran and draws a sharp curve to the west at Pont de Nant. Then he crosses the basin of Les Plans-sur-Bex , which he leaves through a gorge-like exit.

At 730 m above sea level M. at La Peufaire below the village of Gryon , the two source streams unite to form the Avançon. This flows further west through a notch valley and reaches the Rhone valley near Bex , where over time it has deposited its debris in the form of an alluvial cone at the valley outlet. The Avançon flows west of Bex at 398 m above sea level. M. in the Rhône.

The Avançon is characterized by a nival drainage regime . The streams of the two source streams are largely natural and are only built in a few places. Along the lower reaches in the Rhone Valley and near Bex, the Avançon has been partially corrected and provided with flood protection dams.

use

The Sublin power station has been located on the Avançon since 1897 and is operated by the Forces Motrices de l'Avançon. The hydropower of the Avançon was formerly used in the Bex area for the operation of mills, sawmills and other hydropower-dependent industries. In the Vallon de Nant at the foot of the Grand Muveran, a botanical garden (jardin alpin) was laid out in 1891.
