It was created as part of the new construction and reorganization of the central beach section of Figueira in the early 1940s. It was named Avenida Dr. Oliveira Salazar , referring to dictator António de Oliveira Salazar . Its current name is reminiscent of April 25, 1974, when the totalitarian Estado Novo regime in Portugal was overthrown with the Carnation Revolution . As a result, most of the names reminiscent of Salazar were renamed 25 de Abril , with the Lisbon bridge Ponte 25 de Abril being the best-known example.

Before the reorganization of the area, in which the beach was massively widened by land reclamation and u. a. Space was created for the avenue, the area of today's avenida was characterized by beach life, u. a. A horse-drawn tram has operated here since the mid-19th century .

location

The road, also known as Marginal Oceânica or just Marginal (English: coastal road) in everyday life, begins as an extension of the Avenida de Espanha , which runs inwards , approximately at the point where the Mondego flows into the Atlantic Ocean . It runs along the city beach Praia da Claridade , to the city limits to the town of Buarcos , where it merges seamlessly into Avenida do Brasil , which in turn continues along the beach, towards Cabo Mondego . The avenue is lined with palm trees and trees, and its walkways are paved with Portuguese paving with a maritime theme. In the direction of Buarcos it widens into a wide promenade . The sometimes compact rows of buildings remind visitors at first glance of places of mass tourism .

Avenida 25 de Abril separates the beach to the west from the front of houses opposite the beach, in which there are a number of hotels, cafes, restaurants, offices (retail, car rental, etc.) and residential units. Among the highlighted buildings here include the hotel tower of today's Hotel Sweet Atlantic , the Grande Hotel da Figueira and his affiliated, lying on the Stores Piscina-Mar - swimming pool , and the Torre do Relógio one of the landmarks of the city Figueira. Behind the Torre is on the eastern side of the street, opposite the beach, as an extension of the house front, the Esplanada Silva Guimarães , and the buildings standing on it, such as the Castelo Engenheiro Silva u. a. Then the front of the houses and the street that merges into Avenida de Espanha bends inland in a curve, along the confluence of the river into the ocean.

function

When it opened, it became an important thoroughfare. However, this function has been transferred to larger bypass roads since the late 1990s, after changes in traffic management in times of increasing traffic volumes since the early 1980s increasingly relieved them. Today it serves local traffic, tourism and occasionally as an event location. Every year, the Avenida is the scene of various festivities, such as the São João city festival on June 24th, carnival, international folklore festivals, big band parades and the like. a. Its privileged location on the beach and the sometimes glamorous reputation of the seaside resort of Figueira repeatedly brought special events to the Avenida, for example as a starting point for rallies or as a location for national New Year's Eve celebrations.
