Avernakø ( German Avernakö ) is a Danish island in the " Danish South Seas " south of Funen and forms its own parish ( Danish : Sogn ) Avernakø Sogn .
Community structure
This belonged to the Danish municipal reform from 1970 to Harde Sallinge Herred in the former Svendborg County , then to Faaborg Municipality in the County of Funen , in turn, in the course of municipal reform on 1 January 2007 in Faaborg-Midtfyn Municipality in the Region South Denmark opened.
Avernakø belongs to the Association of Danish Small Islands .
Avernakø has an area of 5.86 km² and 97 residents (January 1, 2020). The island originally consisted of the two islands Avernak and Korshavn, which were connected by a 700 meter long dam in 1937. Agriculture is the basis of life.
Attractions
Avernakø is known for its Maibäume in Avernak By and Munke. Otherwise there are maypoles only on the island of Strynø . Avernak By's maypole is the largest and most original in shape in Denmark. On Pentecost Saturday, the men of the village gather around the tree. With the help of long poles, they put it down, remove the old jewelry, tar the trunk, decorate it again and straighten it up again.
There are three prehistoric dolmens on the island (Munke Rund- and Langdysse, and Avernak By Runddysse) on Stendyssegård (farm) which is the best preserved.

There is a ferry connection to Fåborg (South Funen) and Lyø .
