Entry into national politics

He held the mayor's office in Polis Chrysochous until 1998, when he was elected to the House of Representatives of Cyprus for Paphos . Between August 1999 and February 2003 he served as Minister of Communications and Labor in President Glafkos Klerides' cabinet .

He returned to the Cyprus House of Representatives in May 2006 and was re-elected as a member in May 2011 and 2016. During his tenure, he served as chairman of the Parliament's Committee on Foreign and European Affairs and as a member of the Economic and Budget Committee.

President of DISY

On February 28, 2013, Neophytou was finally elected President of his party, as the previous incumbent Nikos Anastasiadis was elected President of Cyprus . At that time Cyprus was badly hit by the financial crisis. The bankruptcy of several banks such as the Bank of Cyprus and the Laiki Bank threatened and with it a national bankruptcy of the entire Republic of Cyprus. To prevent this, the European Union had to come to the rescue with a rescue package.

The then new DISY government was urged to initiate the corresponding reforms in order to restore the economic situation and to overcome the deep recession. In order to achieve this, in addition to the efforts of the government, many necessary reforms had to be carried out with the approval of parliament. Under Neofytou's leadership, DISY managed to obtain the parliamentary support it needed to pass the reforms called for in the Cyprus economic adjustment program, despite the fact that the party lacked a parliamentary majority in parliament. Three years later, Cyprus left the financial aid program and is back on a stable economic path.

Under the leadership of Averof Neofytou, the DISY party was instrumental in the re-election of President Nikos Anastasiades in 2018 and won the parliamentary elections in Cyprus in 2016 , the European elections in the Republic of Cyprus in 2014 and the European elections in 2019 .
