Awtar Krishna Kaul

Awtar Krishna Kaul (born September 27, 1939 in Srinagar , Kashmir , † July 20, 1974 in Bombay , Maharashtra ) was an Indian screenwriter , film director and producer .

Life

After graduating from Panjab University with a degree in natural sciences , Kaul went to New York and studied film studies at the Institute for Film and Television Technology at the City University of New York ( BA degree). During this time he produced three short films. For the documentary film The Golden Years he was awarded as best writer of a documentary film in 1965.

His only feature film, 27 Down (1974), was made with financial support from the Film Finance Corporation and won a National Film Award for best film in Hindi . On the evening of the announcement of the award, Awtar Krishna Kaul died - probably trying to save someone from drowning - in the Arabian Sea off Bombay. His brother accepted the award on his behalf as director and producer.
