Baron Axel Emil Rappe (born October 2, 1838 in Arby, Kalmar Lan , † December 18, 1918 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish general and minister of war .

Life

Axel Emil Rappe was 1,859 Swedish infantry officer but resigned since 1869 in military order in Paris , in May 1870 as a staff officer in French service and took the French German War in the battles of Saarbrücken , Spichern , Vionville (where he was wounded) and Gravelotte part. After the surrender of Metz , he escaped to northern France and took part in the campaign of the newly formed northern army. In the spring of 1871 he fought against the rebellious Arab and Kabyle tribes in Algeria and later worked as a general staff officer in the Versailles army.

After returning to Sweden at the end of 1872, Rappe advanced quickly and had been at the head of the General Staff since 1882. Appointed lieutenant general and war minister in 1892 , he pushed through the increase in active duty from 42 to 90 days as well as other important military reforms and also made a great contribution as a board member of Christian youth associations and a supporter of efforts to increase morality in the army. Since his resignation in October 1899, he was again Chief of Staff until the end of 1905 and received the rank of general in 1903.

Rappe had been married to Anna Sandahl (1855-1946), daughter of doctor Oskar Theodor Sandahl , since May 2, 1875 . He was the father of the opera singer Signe Rappe-Welden (1879–1974), the military officer Axel Oscar Rappe (1884–1945) and five other children. He died on December 18, 1918 at the age of 80 in Stockholm and was buried in the Norra gravningsplatsen cemetery.
