Axel Melchior

Alexander "Axel" Melchior (born October 21, 1981 in Mödling ) is general secretary and media spokesman for the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP). Before that, he worked for three years as the national managing director of the ÖVP. He was general secretary of the Young People's Party from 2009 to 2013 . He has been a member of the National Council since October 23, 2019 .

Career

Melchior grew up in Tribuswinkel and Sooss in Lower Austria and went to school at the Biondekgasse grammar school in Baden , where he graduated from high school in 2000. Melchior, who is best known under the name of Axel Melchior, then did his military service with the Austrian Armed Forces and began studying economics at the Vienna University of Economics and Business

From 2000 to 2010 Melchior worked in the Society for European Politics, after which he moved to Sebastian Kurz's team in 2010  . From 2010 to 2013 he was General Secretary of the Young People's Party, where he also led Kurz's 2013 election campaign for the 2013 National Council election . Kurz received over 50,000 preferential votes in this election  , making him the most successful candidate. Following the election campaign, Melchior coordinated the government negotiations for Kurz 2013 . In December 2013, Melchior then moved to the Federal Ministry for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs , where he became Deputy Head of Cabinet in Kurz's office . When Melchior took over the role of federal manager at the federal headquarters of the ÖVP in 2017, he was entrusted with the campaign management of the National Council elections in 2017 and 2019 as well as the 2019 EU election campaign.

Due to Karl Nehammer's move to the Ministry of the Interior, Axel Melchior became his successor General Secretary of the ÖVP at the beginning of 2020 , while Gaby Schwarz became his deputy.

Melchior lives in Baden, is married and has a father of four.
