Javier Azagra Labiano

Javier Azagra Labiano (born January 24, 1923 in Pamplona , † November 16, 2014 ) was a Spanish clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Cartagena .

Life

Javier Azagra Labiano studied philosophy and theology at the seminary in Pamplona and was ordained a priest on July 23, 1950 . After graduating in theology from the Pontifical University of Salamanca in 1951, he completed a doctorate in canon law at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome in 1954. He was vicar of the parish of Caparroso and Tafalla in Navarra (1954-1958) and diocesan chaplain of the Consiliario diocesano de JACE and the Movimiento Rural in Pamplona. Javier Azagra Labiano was Episcopal Vicar in Málaga (1967–1968) and Diocesan Pastoral Vicar in Pamplona (1968–1970).

Pope Paul VI appointed him on July 17, 1970 auxiliary bishop in Cartagena and titular bishop of Lacubaza . The Archbishop of Pamplona-Tudela , Cardinal Arturo Tabera CMF , donated him episcopal ordination on October 7th of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Miguel Roca Cabanellas , Bishop of Cartagena, and Javier Osés Flamarique , Auxiliary Bishop in Huesca .

On September 23, 1978, he was appointed Bishop of Cartagena by Pope John Paul I. On February 20, 1998, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.

In the Spanish Bishops' Conference CEE he was a member of the commissions for migration (1972–1978) and for the lay apostolate (1978–1999) and youth work (1984–1999).
